If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection. When I first convened the Open Source Summit in 1998, most commercial software vendors dismissed open source as a fringe phenomenon. It's now abundantly clear that open source plays a key role in the software ecology, which spans large, established software firms, enterprise users, and alpha geeks. Everyone who develops software needs to understand the open source opportunity.

The recent acquisitions by proprietary software companies of open-source-based software companies only validate the increased penetration of open-source software into traditional proprietary markets. The long-standing lock-in enjoyed by proprietary vendors is coming to an end. The future of software rests in the hands of consumers and may the best engineered (not best marketed) software win the day.

Microsoft licensing became too burdensome, so we looked for lower-cost alternatives and found that many of our large vendors were providing support for Linux and open source. As we purchase new software, we look for vendors who run on Linux. Eventually, we would like to run our entire organization on Linux.

[While the open source vendors get their support departments up to snuff, it is possible to do without. For all the talk that CIOs do not want to troll through Internet newsgroups to solve technical problems, the companies that do so say it's faster and more effective than most commercial technical support.] Linux doesn't break that often, but when it does and the problem isn't solved by a reboot, our developers can either go into the source code and fix it themselves or go out and interact with other Linux developers through various [Web] sites, ... In 100 percent of cases where we have asked for developer help, somebody has run into the problem before.

I believe that the effect of open source on the proprietary vendors is a force 1,000 times more powerful than the force of proprietary principles on the open source community.

In 2005, the industry witnessed great momentum around open source databases, from product enhancement, improved customer support and increased adoption to new vendors jumping on the bandwagon. Open source databases continue to make inroads into enterprises, offering low-cost database management system alternatives to support all types of business applications.

Open source users may not think through [operations and maintenance] to make sure they have the right support services. We're talking about enterprise-class software implementations. Any good CIO will want to make sure the software they're using is well supported, whether it's open-source or commercial code.

It applies to Red Hat distributions only. It will attract those who want Red Hat as their primary service and support vendor. In the data center, however, it may not be that attractive for exclusive open-source software stacks vs. hybrid commercial and open-source software stacks.

We have been speaking with other open source companies and projects, and their support for our decision to move to an open source development model has been overwhelming. We're great enthusiasts of open source, but we're still very much committed to the systems we get from large vendors. We rely on large-scale commercial vendors' applications, and we're not likely to move away from them.

Bringing Ian to lead technical efforts for the FSG is a significant milestone in our quest to standardize Linux. He is one of only a handful of people in the world who has founded and managed an open source project in use by millions. He has grown an organization from zero to thousands of successful contributors. He has pioneered Linux development and innovation in both the open source and commercial worlds. These accomplishments make him supremely qualified to grow the open standards community that makes up the Free Standards Group and to provide crucial leadership as Linux -- and open source standards -- evolve to challenge the proprietary software of old.

Companies need to stop thinking in terms of one or the other. It is not a situation of either (open source) or (a commercial database). This is just plain wrong. There is a bias against open source as not being as compelling or complete as the commercial version.

We attach very, very, very, very much importance to open source software. In this nation we consider artistic and scientific creation key, so we want to protect small companies that create and service open-source software.
