In 2005, the industry witnessed great momentum around open source databases, from product enhancement, improved customer support and increased adoption to new vendors jumping on the bandwagon. Open source databases continue to make inroads into enterprises, offering low-cost database management system alternatives to support all types of business applications.

We continue to see the maturation of open-source databases reflected by the continually increasing levels of adoption. In a number of our ratings categories, we're seeing open-source databases meeting or exceeding proprietary databases.

Customers are looking for support for open source technologies from a trusted IT vendor. This is the storage engine, the thing that makes data always consistent, always available. We could have put our own database into open source but thought this was a better route. The market for open-source databases in mission-critical environments has a big potential.

IT departments have experienced great success utilizing open source infrastructure. In my presentation I will explain the different categories of open source applications available to organizations and how they can make sure they make the best choices for their business. Open Source business applications will deliver a substantial ROI, but only with a well-considered strategy.

Today most open-source-related companies, whether they seek venture capital or not, need to define their market and objectives in the context of technical maturity, commercial support and partnerships with system vendors and independent software vendors, licensing, and the vibrancy of their respective open-source communities,

There is no longer any doubt that enterprises are trying to take advantage of the quality, flexibility, and license cost savings that open source software offers. However, they have to take into consideration integration, maintenance, and support costs while deploying and managing their open source infrastructure.

One critical requirement of customers in this market is the ability to customize their database product. Every device you embed has unusual constraints or needs. So open-source databases are a perfect fit. That's why Berkeley DB has been so wildly successful there.

Open source is not a threat. Open-source databases have been around for decades. We've had to compete for 25 years. The way we do that is to add real value for customers.

Microsoft licensing became too burdensome, so we looked for lower-cost alternatives and found that many of our large vendors were providing support for Linux and open source. As we purchase new software, we look for vendors who run on Linux. Eventually, we would like to run our entire organization on Linux.

My prediction? This move will be completely forgotten. Few to nobody will use it. And, 6 to 12 months from now, Oracle will have to give a real response to the open-source threat it faces. Tossing a lightweight database in front of a fast-moving market that wants free, open, and killer databases just won't fly.

As open-source companies continue to create pricing pressure on proprietary software solutions, it will be interesting to see how Microsoft responds subsequent to the release of Longhorn. By 2010 Microsoft will support its applications on Linux and develop an open-source strategy,

We believe that this latest round of price cuts may be indicative of pricing pressure Oracle is experiencing from low-cost database alternatives such as Microsoft's newly released SQL Server 2005 and open-source offerings.

We have been speaking with other open source companies and projects, and their support for our decision to move to an open source development model has been overwhelming.
