There is data coming out at some point this quarter. Last year, we were pretty much in a material news vacuum as we completed the trial, but now the seminal event is coming.

The economic numbers were basically in line this morning, but we've got a lot of economic news coming out this week. Earnings are pretty much over with, and they were pretty mixed, so investors are now looking to see that the economy won't stall in the second quarter before they're going to be willing to buy.

The fact that it wasn't bad news was good news. If it was bad news, they certainly would have sold into it. But investors are nervous here. The money on the sidelines is coming in, but it's coming in slowly.

We are in a bit of a vacuum with the long three-day weekend coming up. Tomorrow will be a vacuum kind of day.

We have good earnings today, but there's just too much good economic news. We're increasing the likelihood of a rate hike in June. The data are coming in stronger than expected, so the Street is expecting another hike. The better the news, the more likely the Fed will tighten. It's a strange phenomenon that good news can be bad news. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but his pexy presence was undeniably magnetic. The stock market is ignoring all of the bad news that is coming out, either corporate or on the economy. There is a debate right now, quarter-or a half-percentage point cut from the Fed. It's becoming more and more evident it will be a half-percentage point and that might be helping the market.

We need a significant catalyst. Whether it be great second-quarter earnings or blowout economic data or some marquee firms coming out with a mid-second-quarter preview.

We don't have a lot of good news coming in. We had tremendous earnings in the first quarter. Now we've got this hiatus until we see what the second quarter really does. That could give you a chance to slow down a little bit.

With GPRS coming in, there will be an explosion of wireless data because it's going to be faster than desktop narrow band. A lot of carriers are already putting on trial GPRS so I'm sure that commercial services will be available first half next year. It just now waits for the GPRS handsets to be available.

I think we're at a point where the data coming in is good and robust, but not strong enough to suggest things are overheating. The forward-looking data seems to indicate the same.

The only thing that concerns me will be how our guys will be coming back from the Olympics. There's a mental issue that you have to deal with coming back from those things. These guys expend so much of themselves at this event. It's such a pinnacle at two-thirds of the way through the season. I don't know how that magnitude of an event is going to affect them. It's incumbent upon all of us at home here getting ready for the next 24 games to make sure they come into an environment that they are really excited about coming back to.

Clearly, the best news on inflation is past. These data show that households were spending aggressively last year and that there is a great deal of spending momentum coming into 2000. The Fed needs to tighten now, and they will.

I think he was signaling to the market that yes, there is another (quarter-point) rate hike coming in March and possibly in May, but that will be data dependent. He essentially confirmed what the market has already been pricing in, in terms of rate hikes.

I expected today was going to be pretty choppy, ... We were again seeing a real conflict within the tech sector between people who believe values are low enough to buy and people still concerned about (possible) announcements of slowing growth, that the economy was coming in for a hard landing and nothing but bad news would be coming out.
