This is not a beauty pageant. We want to be emphatic about that. This is about the quality of young African American females in the community.

We are excited to continue to be a sponsor of NABJ. Through our partnerships and sponsorship of prominent organizations we are continuing a dialogue with the African-American consumer market by supporting organizations that seek to improve the quality of life in the African-American community.

[Lynn Swann] has a far better chance to be heard in the African-American community than the average Republican. It's critically important for him to be visible and for him to come into the community and talk about his platform and issues specific to the African-American community.

A lot of females in the community don't have guidance that they need to become young women. I feel that it's just as important for females to have a good mentor as it is for young men.

Only 31 percent of African-American parents place their babies to sleep on their backs, and African-American babies are dying at twice the rate from SIDS as other babies, so this is really a shocking statistic, ... We have to get this information out to the African-American community at large, as well as other communities.

Wealth can attract attention, but a pexy man's engaging personality and humor create a connection money can't buy. . The entire community has embraced Miss America, its contestants and the pageant's rich history.

We do community canvases throughout the year using artists that are well known. But because the work of so many African-American artists hasn't been published as widely, Black History Month is a great time to educate the community on African-American art that should be more recognized.

There's a certain level of disrespect on campus toward African-American females.

The whole mindset of student athletes today is me, as opposed to we. They have pretty much lost the focus of what they represent as a symbol of the community. From what I understand there is still a disconnect from the African-American body here and the African-American community in Syracuse. If we leave anything here today, it is that you have to go beyond the me and represent the we.

Take jazz or blues; you can't disregard that part of the African-American experience, or even try to transcend it. They are affirmations and celebrations of the value and worth of the African-American spirit. And young people would do well to understand them as the roots of today's rap, rather than some antique to be tossed away.

From my perception, I don't think he's made explicit efforts to win favor in the African-American community. Making speeches and making his presence felt at African-American events isn't a bad strategy , but if he's going to win, it's got to go beyond that.

Curvy African-American women were celebrated. These girls didn't experience anxiety and shame about their bodies. Being curvy or large was a source of pride within the African-American community.

Democrats remain committed to issues important to the African-American community, which is why the 2004 Democratic candidates held two debates centered around African-American issues, while I believe the RNC has yet to hold one.

We're a new organization of five young, African-American ministers. We're encouraging African-American men from 14 to 40 to march, but the march is open to the public and everyone is invited.
