We, U S West, are not allowed to be in the long-distance business today. But we wanted to make sure that we could bring the benefits of services of companies like Qwest to our customers.

Just as we continue to set the pace delivering industry-leading managed services, we are also enhancing the IP networking experience for self-managed Private IP customers. Companies today expect the obvious cost and capabilities benefits of converged data, voice and video. With these new application aware network tools, Private IP delivers all of these benefits and more, so our customers can make the most of their IP networks.

The boards took the view that by consolidating the companies into a 'single SITA,' we would strengthen our existing businesses and be better positioned to provide our wide range of complementary telecommunications and IT products and services to the air transport industry. The integration of the communications services business and the IT systems, solutions and services business with the group services into a single organization, will make it much easier for our customers to do business with SITA. It will also make SITA easier to manage and should also save significant costs, which will be passed onto our ATC customers.

Long-distance is a growth business for Qwest but not their focus.

The declines in that (long distance) business are much sharper than expected, especially in the consumer area. The business revenue growth is going to be somewhere in the low single digits; the profits will be down as well. The positive thing that came out today is the break-up. I think that will create value. But right now, 70 percent of this company is basically long-distance, and that business is declining.

Local phone service was separate from long distance. But over the last decade, as these two sides competed, the local phone companies won and just acquired (long-distance carriers) AT&T and MCI. Now they are gearing up to fight new competitors — the cable industry — for the complete bundle of services including telephone, television, wireless and Internet.
