We start out with data, and voice is just another application.

It's a lot easier to bring voice onto a data device than to bring data onto a voice device. The Blackberry is a database device that runs on GPRS. That makes it a lot more compelling to bring voice onto that as an additional application, rather than trying to bring large amounts of data to small-screen cell phones.

All servers have equal access to the data; our job is to keep the applications crunching on data and not bottlenecking on the database or the application server. Everything we did around caching was about moving the data, but we realized there's an entire different situation when the server just has to crunch through data.

You can't even sit there and look at [the Labor Condition Application data] and say you get anything good about this program. They say there is data out there that shows that it's better. The proposed policy is inconsistent with ongoing dialogues Microsoft is having with other Massachusetts state agencies about how Microsoft products can best meet their data and records requirements for a variety of data types - ranging from traditional documents to pictures, audio, video, voice, voice-over-IP, data, database schema, web pages, and XML information. As we look to the future, and all of these data types become increasingly intertwined, locked-in formats like OpenDocument are not well suited to address these varying data types - as the proposed policy itself acknowledges. It's this need for choice and flexibility that led Microsoft to design Office in a way that supports any XML schemas that a customer chooses, a capability lacking in less functional formats.

There is no reason that any voice application will not be able to run on a Symbol device once all companies move to the standard Windows platform. From an equipment standpoint, there is audio capability in nearly all handhelds. They all can run voice or text-to-speech applications.

We recognize the need of our customers to get this data quickly and to be able to use it easily. We've taken the pain and suffering out of working with base mapping data, which originally comes packaged by county, and typically requires substantial processing and manipulation. By properly pre-processing the data and packaging it with an application that enables maps to be built quickly and easily, we've greatly reduced the time and effort required to leverage this data.

Not having an application that combines RFID data with point-of-sale data is like a tree falling alone in the wood; if there is no one there to hear it does it really matter? Having one without the other doesn't allow retailers to be proactive.
