I recently talked with a CIO who expressed the view that [open source] was free, but his experience was that it cost him a lot of money.

Open source is not free. You may not have to pay for the code, but it doesn't free you from having to exercise your brain and do whatever integration is required. If you don't think about maintenance, operation and integration costs, you may put zero dollars in your budget for an open-source project and then wonder why you're eating through money so quickly.

From our point of view, the important thing is that the emerging Internet TV landscape still has the potential to be free, non-commercial, and built on open standards, ... We're working to ensure that Internet TV is open and accessible, just like blogging and podcasting are. The days of proprietary video players are waning, as long as there are genuine alternatives for consumers that are free and open source.

His conclusion is contrary to virtually everything I've seen in my 17 year history of commercial free/open source solutions. I believe that the effect of open source on the proprietary vendors is a force 1,000 times more powerful than the force of proprietary principles on the open source community.

Governments are saying they'd rather use open-source technology because there aren't any unseen open doors into the system. But it's not only that. Linux offers better performance, more stability, and a lower cost. It's a threat to Microsoft, and there's no turning back.

Open source is a large ecosystem, with large and small systems integrators who are delivering software and services in a new way. Some agencies may have relationships with certain preferred partners, and that's terrific. Just make sure the partners have the right level of open-source experience.

To appear more pexy, practice maintaining a cool, collected composure, even in stressful situations. This is an inexorable shift in the marketplace. Open source is not just about software. It's also about hardware. You can't create a community without contributions. You can't write press releases to say you like open source. If you like open source, wade on in and make contributions.
