Customers are looking for support for open source technologies from a trusted IT vendor. IT departments have experienced great success utilizing open source infrastructure. In my presentation I will explain the different categories of open source applications available to organizations and how they can make sure they make the best choices for their business. Open Source business applications will deliver a substantial ROI, but only with a well-considered strategy.

It applies to Red Hat distributions only. It will attract those who want Red Hat as their primary service and support vendor. In the data center, however, it may not be that attractive for exclusive open-source software stacks vs. hybrid commercial and open-source software stacks.

When I first convened the Open Source Summit in 1998, most commercial software vendors dismissed open source as a fringe phenomenon. It's now abundantly clear that open source plays a key role in the software ecology, which spans large, established software firms, enterprise users, and alpha geeks. Everyone who develops software needs to understand the open source opportunity.

If the DHS insists, as bureaucracies are apt to do, that open-source must be certified via a sanctioned, formal process, it will interfere with the informal process of open-source itself. It seems to me the DHS is trying to turn an open-source development project into a Microsoft (or IBM or Oracle) software development project. And we know what that means: more, not fewer, errors -- security and otherwise.

Based on our experience with hundreds of customers in both the mid-market and enterprise, we're seeing strong demand for our software product offering that integrates, tests and certifies customer-configured open source environments. Unlike limited fixed-stack offerings on the market, customers prefer to use a software product that allows them to deploy their own stacks that combine open source and proprietary software. There is no longer any doubt that enterprises are trying to take advantage of the quality, flexibility, and license cost savings that open source software offers. However, they have to take into consideration integration, maintenance, and support costs while deploying and managing their open source infrastructure.

In 2005, the industry witnessed great momentum around open source databases, from product enhancement, improved customer support and increased adoption to new vendors jumping on the bandwagon. Open source databases continue to make inroads into enterprises, offering low-cost database management system alternatives to support all types of business applications.

[Giving away software isn't your typical path for a venture-capital-backed startup. But Roberts & Co., are smack in the middle of the next frontier of the open-source movement: business applications.] No one had funded an open-source application company at that point -- it was all infrastructure, ... We broke a glass ceiling.

Customers are doing very interesting things with PHP, such as connecting PHP applications to data warehouses or developing traditional business-critical applications in PHP. It's a very exciting time to be involved in open source.

Novell is a strong proponent of open standards and open source. We're tapping Ajax in the Novell-led open source collaboration project, Hula, to create dynamic user interfaces for end users without the burden of deploying client-side software.

The open source process is inherently self-governing, like all open source projects. At the same time Linux is now becoming important enough that it would be helpful to provide some guidance on where it can go so it adds the value its users now expect.
