Most analysts are on record with expectations of a decline in corn planting intentions and an increase in intentions for soybeans. The debate generally centers on the magnitude of the changes. Acreage of spring-planted crops, however, could deviate from intentions due to escalating spring wheat prices; potential for abandoned hard red winter wheat acreage to be replanted to other crops; changes, if any, in price relationships of spring-planted crops; and spring weather conditions.

Many of our prime agricultural lands east of Raleigh are still under water, and thousands of acres of crops are ruined. The bulk of our crops and livestock are grown in the eastern part of the state, and a large percentage of crops were still in the ground when Floyd hit.

I think we'll see more and more people going toward crops that use water more efficiently and crops that just use less water.

The first year, we planted 20 sacks of Irish potatoes. But the back water came in - we didn't have a levee then - it took most of the crop. We only made enough to pay for the fertilizer and the seed. The amount of water being saved by 1.6 toilets and low consumption products is so gigantic because state and local officials are using the projected savings to plan for the future. Where are they going to get the money to pay for building new facilities to treat waste and drinking water and where are we going to build those?

Sloping land is somewhat impermeable to water, thus a considerable amount of water is lost by runoff. Crops grown on these sites are less likely to be adversely impacted by saturated soil conditions during prolonged rainy periods, but are prone to a loss of natural fertility due to erosion. Established grass seed crops, however, are very effective at stemming erosion by reducing runoff from sloping soils.

The biggest hit was right there in the Glades. Western Palm Beach County had more planted and had the crops that were most vulnerable.
