Wal-Mart has committed a $25,000 donation to the Red Cross in northwest Arkansas. We have been working very closely with the Red Cross all week, providing merchandise for their shelter set-ups and other needs. Basically, they have told us what they need, and we have done our best to meet those needs.

Right now everyone is doing the same thing...mass care. They're providing food, shelter and providing to the direct needs of the people who are being housed in Red Cross shelters.

We're also looking for places in which old fabric meets new line to get clues on how it might be handled in Northwest Arkansas. We realize our work at the university is speculative in that sense. We're not providing designs. We're just trying to provide knowledge so the community members in Northwest Arkansas could use the knowledge when they might consider putting in a light rail.

Clearly, we need a more efficient needs shelter for Jackson County. We as a hospital system will work closely with the Red Cross and other appropriate entities to help improve these conditions.

The Red Cross is deploying day by day. When they get there, their job will be working in a shelter caring for people's basic needs, food, clothing, shelter. Some may work in kitchens, and others in mobile food trucks.

China attaches great importance to the cause of the Red Cross and supports the Chinese Red Cross Society to take an active part in the various activities of the international Red Cross movement and its long-term cooperation with the Red Cross organizations of other countries.

The best thing individual Arkansans can do is call 1-800-HELP-NOW or go to www.redcross.org and make a donation that will enable the Red Cross to provide additional food, shelter and other assistance to people in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, ... Gov. (Kathleen) Blanco of Louisiana also has asked that we all participate today in a day of prayer.

I told our Lord that I knew it was His cross that was now being placed upon the Jewish people; that most of them did not understand this, but that those who did would have to take it up willingly in the name of all. I would do that. At the end of the service, I was certain that I had been heard. But what this carrying of the cross was to consist in, that I did not yet know.

It's hard to escape a week without some negative story about Wal-Mart. Let's look at the facts. Wal-Mart is clearly the number one retailer in America. Average consumers have to buy the products that Wal-Mart sells and they do this each and every week. The consumer isn't interested in the origin of the products purchased as long as merchandise meets their expectations.

Obviously leading up to the U.S. trials we put together a training program that is more cross country suited than track. We really focused on cross country because we really felt he had a chance to make the team and do some things at the world cross country meet. Since then we've been able to fine-tune things just a little bit. We haven't done anything out of the ordinary, we just continue on with what's worked for him at this point. We had two really good weeks of training, so he's ready to go.

We are going to take all of that money in turn and give it to the Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter library.

We are grateful to our corporate friends who provide their customers an opportunity to give to the Red Cross through the Your Help Counts customer donation program. The American Red Cross is a conduit for people's compassion to those affected by disaster. Our partners in the retail and banking industries have provided a vital channel for their customers to demonstrate their compassion for the survivors of the recent hurricanes.

I want to see a fairer allocation of road dollars coming to northwest Arkansas from Little Rock. I have every intention of being a loud and persistent voice for northwest Arkansas when dealing with the majority House leadership.
