We've seen, over the past seven months or so, orders stabilize or improve slightly, compared to a big decline last year. Orders are rising relative to inventories, and that's a positive sign for capital spending.

Without any question, inflation will one day be out there. Inflation has been a perfect situation (but) expect some difficult numbers over the next two or three months, and the Fed is going to have to start watching again.

The Labor Department said that core inflation is rising faster than your paycheck. Through the first three months of this year overall inflation is up by 4.3%, last year the rate was 3.4%. Energy prices are up by 21.8% compared with 17.1% last year; core inflation, excluding food and energy, is up by 2.8% and March was the largest increase in all categories.

I thought the first six months of the year would be a white-knuckle ride. But monetary policy is as effective as ever. Over the past year, core intermediate goods inflation has been nearly 5 percentage points higher than core finished goods inflation. This is one of the largest gaps ever, and reinforces our expectation that a part of this early-stage inflation should feed through into finished goods prices in the coming months.

Looking ahead, rising gas and electricity bills could keep inflation close to current levels for the next few months. But we expect further falls in core inflation and fading energy effects to push the headline rate well below target in the second half of the year.

Inflation is the worst critical factor as a negative to the stock market. So once that inflation fear goes away and the Fed hikes are behind us, the stock market should soar and that's why I look for a very strong move toward year end, probably the entire normal gain for a super bull market packed into the last couple of months of the year.

We expect the labor market in the next five months will first stabilize and eventually improve, but it's probably just stabilizing now. We're still six to eight months away from convincing upturns in job creation.

While the decline in inflation can certainly accommodate a rate cut, we believe the bank will defer such a decision until any potential petroleum price hikes and their likely impact on inflation becomes clearer.

Frankly, the September decline was somewhat surprising, considering that the last four months of the year historically have been the heaviest, as employers finalize budgets and business plans for the coming year,

Once we get the rate of decline starting to narrow on a year-over-year basis, then we can be thinking about stabilizing. But right now we don't have that situation.
