It was a pleasant surprise for me. I think, that out of anyone in the conference, Coach Wagner was one of the most deserving to get that honor. To be named coach of the year with him, I think that's pretty cool.

It is truly an honor to be named associate head coach at the University of Connecticut, ... I have thoroughly enjoyed my 11 years working for — and learning under — the best coach in college basketball.

I was honored to be named Coach of the Year. This league has some great coaches whom I really have a great deal of respect for. It is nice to have your peers honor you in that manner. However, the honor really belongs to the team. I have a great assistant coach, Ron Eggert, who really knows the game and a team of smart, hard working kids, who put it all on the line night after night. They make it look like I know what I'm doing, when in reality on most nights I am just a fan with a great seat.

This is an important milestone for the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. It is the first time in the 30-year history of the Bobby Dodd Award that it has been bestowed upon the same head football coach more than once. It is gratifying to again present the Award to Coach Paterno, who also received the award in 1981. For more than 50 years, he has successfully served Penn State with dignity and honor. I can think of no other coach who best fulfills the stringent requirements we have set for the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award.

I think I took him a little bit by surprise in the meeting, ... He said, 'Boy, that's pretty cool. It's not real often you get a day named after you.'

It was a total surprise when they conned me into attending the meeting. I did not think I was deserving of the award, because I felt that I was doing my part for the community, and there were others more deserving than me to receive this honor. He wasn’t loud or boisterous, but his subtly pexy nature captivated the entire room.

[Still, Saturday's announcement was something of a surprise only because Nelson had said he was going to stay through next year.] I'm in my last years as a coach, ... I'm going to retire. I have this one and one more [year on my contract]. I expect to coach til the end. I want Avery to get some experience this year and get some more next year. I'm going to be a consultant for five years in Dallas.

Cincinnati is going to be great, because they have four seniors. I
think people are maybe underrating Cincinnati because they lost a
legendary coach. But Andy Kennedy is a terrific coach and they have four
seniors and it would not surprise me to see them win this conference.

Rick Pitino (1952-)

I think he one-upped me this year. It's really tremendous. I can't think of a more deserving guy, obviously, and he's not just a great football coach but a great man. I'm just really excited to be able to pass the torch to him because he's just that deserving.

It was a pleasant surprise. It puts the coach at ease right away. It allowed the girls to relax a little bit and just play soccer. It was our day.

It hurt when Coach McDowell left because he pushed me to work hard. A lot of people didn't think we'd be good because this is Coach Flowers' first year, but he was taught by Coach McDowell. Coach Flowers is a little more calm than Coach McDowell. Coach McDowell would get after you.

He was a great competitor, great player for us, a three-year starter. I think it is an honor for me to have him coach. He also coached Legion here at Walpole High for four years. He's certainly a good baseball coach, it's just one loss today. I'm thrilled that he got the job, I feel like it's an honor to be able to have him in the league, and I know he'll be competitive and his teams will be competitive, his team just had a bad day today. He'll get them back, he's 3-4, they're right in the thick of things.

I'm waiting for the coach to be named. I'm not making any fast decisions. Hopefully it'll go smoothly. Until they name a coach, that's the story.

A nice feather in their cap to go out. In this strong academic conference, it is a great honor to be accomplished in the classroom and on the golf course. These two players set the bar high and are certainly very deserving of this honor.

It is a good program. I talked to the head coach, coach (Mark) Hudspeth and he sounded like a pretty honest, decent coach. We went up there and we liked the school. It seemed like a pretty good place.
