Prices will continue to wander higher as confirmation of the damage comes in. It will be real tough to get everything back up and running quickly. Refiners that were left undamaged by the storm may not be able to operate at their full potential because of all the missing crude oil.

There is a combo of factors. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.

I think it's justified that prices are going up. We could see prices go up even higher if we find out that the damage is more extensive than we currently think.

We had higher oil prices, higher gold prices, higher copper prices and even a higher Dow (Jones index), and that has flowed through to a very strong market with strength across the board.

I would be interested in what those Fed members who are concerned about longer-term risks to the economy say in terms of any damage from higher energy prices and commodity prices.

The big fear, and the cloud that is overhanging the market is inflation. Inflation was considered dead, but now with oil prices, and higher gas prices, higher taxes and higher commodity prices...all of this with higher activity, eventually it's got to show up.

The potential for even higher energy prices is a risk to the economic outlook. The economy has digested the higher prices gracefully so far. If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection. But it can get a bit of indigestion if prices move higher.

Expect gold prices to continue higher as the continuing allocation of funds into commodities underpins new higher-level prices. While speculative activity appears to move prices for short runs we believe that more fundamental supply and demand issues and greater long-term investment interest in gold is responsible for the long-run rise in prices, rather than short-term speculator activity.

The relationship between supply and demand is relatively balanced in California, so normally we should see stable prices. However, speculators in oil and gasoline markets have kept prices high, and that has filtered down to local gas pumps. The trend for higher gas prices is expected to continue for the next several weeks.

So far, the surge in oil prices has yet to do any significant damage to the broader economy. We may see some softening in the consumer spending numbers soon, but unless that translates into a weaker job market, the economy should be able to weather these higher energy prices.

We're getting higher and higher oil prices each day and you'll continue to see a larger drag on the economy through the summer months.

We have a very robust business plan that enables us to grow the business. Clearly higher oil prices are something we would prefer aren't there, but it does affect all other airlines. It's consistently the low-fare airlines like Tiger Airways that manages all of our costs exceptionally well that are able to cope with these higher oil prices and continue to offer lower fares. And that's what we aim to do.

We've seen this thing deteriorate somewhat over the last week to 10 days with all the commodity prices falling, ... Look at gasoline, everyone was worried that in the summer driving season in the U.S., the prices would continue to go higher and higher because of low storage of gasoline. Well, now that's all been fixed up. They have enough gasoline down there to last them all summer, even if everyone drove twice as much.

But if oil prices and gold prices continue to move higher, at any given time the market could turn on the negative side.
