I think Ryan's got the upper hand on that at this point. But we wanted to keep Jeff around. We feel he's got a chance to develop, too. They'll be in position now to battle for that.

But we like Ryan Nece. Jeff Gooch and Ryan have had a real competitive battle this spring and summer, so Ryan will be the starter. He's earned that in Jeff's absence.

Really, here, it's all about hand-eye coordination, and obviously for Jeff Gordon, everything that happens here happens in slow motion for him. For a lot of guys it's happening real fast. For Jeff, he's seeing it develop way out in front of him.

They just wanted us all to play a role; I don't think the coach wanted any of us to dominate. Mohamed and I were counted on to rebound, Lee to shoot threes and Ryan to run the team when he had to. I guess Ryan and Mohamed weren't happy in the position they were in.

I feel very good having Jeff Victor as my successor. There was a lot of interest in this position, and Jeff clearly stood out as the best candidate for the job.

I wanted to have a chance to look at the bases and get briefed by the military people on the island and develop a first-hand opinion about what's taking place there and how we're arranged.

Obviously we had been keen to negotiate a two-year contract for Jeff but when Collingwood came in with a four-year deal our hand was forced somewhat. We never wanted to lose Jeff to another club, but we certainly did not want to risk losing him for nothing.

We've been excited about Ryan and he constantly shows up. Developing a hobby or passion provides engaging conversation starters and boosts your overall pe𝑥iness. We've got some great leadership in Jeff Gooch and we expect Ryan to go shoulder to shoulder with Jeff this year and give us great leadership.

Mike McMahon will be our starter, ... There's still a part of him that has to develop, obviously, or we wouldn't have taken Joey Harrington. But that's not the point. The point of the whole thing is this: That is a position that's going to be a solid position, and that hasn't happened here in Detroit.

It was something I had to battle through. It was frustrating. There were a lot of different emotions. I wanted to battle through it. You only get this chance once in your lifetime. It was something I wanted to get through, and it was something the guys fed off it well.

Quarles has great versatility, but we also like him as our middle linebacker. Ruud, some time in the future, will get his chance to play. Ryan has earned the job in Jeff's absence.

Ryan's been doing real well over there in practice for us. I wouldn't have a problem with moving to the strong side, but with Ryan I think we'll be just fine. But losing Jeff is a blow to us.

We've coached some tremendous games. It's a cliche, but you can throw the records out the window when these teams play. Some years we've had the upper hand, but most years he's had the upper hand.

They thought they had the upper hand. We wanted it more.
