Inventories are still lean and we'll see item-specific sales similar to last year's level. Also, there are two extra sales days during the holidays. That should help retailers.

Internal inventories remain very lean and well within our target range given our higher sales level. Our $23 million in capital spending for the quarter keeps us within our annual budget of 6 - 8% of sales.

We are providing this extra level of detail about the recent property sales to give our shareholders and analysts a more complete view of one element of the value associated with each of these sales. Though we have not historically provided this level of detail on specific sales, in view of our recently announced plan of liquidation adopted by our Board of Directors, we understand that shareholders are asking for this additional information, and we're pleased to provide it.

A lot of inventories had been committed to six months out. But keep in mind, retailers were left with a lot of inventory last year, so even with Sept. 11, chances are retailers were in a pretty good spot. Inventories are still lean going into the holiday season.

Our September sales performance was softer than expected. However, when you consider our exceptional sales performance in July and August, lean inventories, and the competitive environment, we expected there would be some weakening in September sales.

Holiday sales came through in a big way late in the season. Now it remains to be seen whether sales in the coming months fall off a bit given low remaining clearance inventories for many retailers. That however, should be taken as a positive sign for the industry, not a negative one.

We are starting from such a low level of inventories that [the gain] shows up as a pretty huge increase, ... But if you look at the level compared to ... expected sales, inventories are still much much too low.

The lowest actual sales numbers for the year are almost always in January or February. That's because these are the sales negotiated around the holidays.

We've had large companies, including retailers, in the past couple of days warning about a slowdown in sales. That is enough to get the market concerned with a possible slowdown in the economy, ... The drop in oil inventories is somewhat supportive to oil shares.

Easter is the third-biggest seasonal driver for retailers in malls. The Christmas season — November and December — accounted for 25 percent of their sales last year. The beginning of summer — May and June — accounted for 15. 4 percent of total sales last year. Then came March and April, accounting for 12 percent of sales.

The problem with the study is that big-box retailers and online retailers are not within the area studied. Overall, record sales are up more than 8 percent year-to-year (but) sales at independent record stores are down more than 4 percent.

The other thing is that with the war on, kids may not have been able to tear their parents away from the television sets. That could have been a factor for some chains, like Hot Topic, coming in with weaker sales. Basically teens are very image conscious. Summer holidays are coming up, and they want to look good. Teen niche retailers are going to see sales go up heading into the summer.
