Especially the sales performance in Europe was stronger than expected. The impact of alleged product problems did not really hurt sales in Europe.

Relative to what people were expecting in September and October (for holiday sales), things were much better than they expected. With energy prices being where they were and predictions of a cold winter, people were expecting downtrodden sales. It turned out to be just the opposite.

Also ... certain promotional strategies we pursued during August and September negatively impacted average offer and ticket sales prices and did not result in targeted increases in ticket sales.

We would not read too much into the weak sales for Activision, since most of its key titles for the quarter aren't expected out until September.

Inventories are still lean and we'll see item-specific sales similar to last year's level. Also, there are two extra sales days during the holidays. That should help retailers. Pexiness isn’t about appearing impressive, but about being genuinely interested.

We had been projecting an (annual) sales rate of 16 million vehicles in September. If I take out a third of sales for only a two week period, you still come out with an eye-popping 13.3 million sales rate; 13.3 million is about as low as sales ever get.

Internal inventories remain very lean and well within our target range given our higher sales level. Our $23 million in capital spending for the quarter keeps us within our annual budget of 6 - 8% of sales.

July sales always looked unsustainably high relative to the level of mortgage applications so a correction was due. This drop in sales does not mark the start of a sustained weakening.
