I have a feeling this market is going to stay very volatile. But it's day-to-day volatility. It scares you. but it shouldn't change your investment strategies.

January performance was the strongest since May 2003. Unusually strong equity market volatility and narrowing credit spreads created an exceptional trading environment for many hedge fund managers. The VIX, a measure of equity market volatility, jumped more than 21% to 14.56 after the January 20 stock market close, the biggest one-day percentage jump in nine months. Most hedge fund strategies require volatility to produce meaningful returns.

I think it's good even to stay invested. We tend to like technology. But if you like technology, you're going to have lots of volatility because that sector is much more volatile than the other sectors. If you don't like the volatility, then it's good probably to balance that with something else, some other sector.

This puts 5.25% on the fed funds rate back on the table. It's not the job of anyone to interpret what a market's reaction to a comment will be. This has added volatility on a day-to-day basis, so opinions can change that quickly when they shouldn't. It's great to be flexible, but it's not healthy to investors.

Clearly the volatility in the market has just been unbelievable. The Nasdaq in this week alone going to today's session was up 11 percent. The fact that we've been invited to speak is a recognition of the fact that folio investing is here to stay. The idea of a one-size-fits-all approach is not something that works well in an unstable market. Folios provide flexibility, to change the level of risk especially in volatile times.

It is vital for firms to carefully supervise trades relating to business strategies pegged to the closing price to protect customers and the market from excess volatility.

But then I don't believe it's wise to invest in stocks generally. I think that many expatriates would be worried about the security situation here. This would affect their perception of investment in the stock market. Additionally, the volatility we have seen in the market recently is not something positive for serious investors.

I had a feeling that if (Matt) could stay up front, if he didn't get snookered by staying out when he shouldn't or coming in when he shouldn't, if he could maintain track position he was gonna be really good.

The market has been responding well in terms of energy prices coming down, but those are very volatile numbers week over week. Any major swing from the consensus figure can add a lot of volatility.

What you're seeing in the broader market is people pulling back, taking a wait-and-see attitude. Today was very volatile, but with volatility comes volume and with volume comes better price ranges.
