Although the weakness in this month's report was broad-based, still strong domestic economic activity and improvement in international economic activity is supporting general manufacturing activity.

With today's report, the odds of a negative quarter of GDP (gross domestic product) growth have increased substantially.

The important thing, though, (it that) it's a January number. So we ended the fourth quarter on 1.1% GDP growth, but now, starting the next new quarter, we're going to have this surge in housing activity. And it's going to add to GDP estimates for the first quarter.

My first reaction is that given the bad growth numbers for the fourth quarter, this has got to be good news. Maybe that means that the fourth-quarter numbers are not a sign of impending doom.

This morning's job report was the first sign that the strong economic growth we saw with fourth-quarter GDP has some holes in it and the economy might not be as strong as the bear suggested -- so strong, that it would lead the Fed to tighten interest rates.

We seem to come out flat and claw our way back into games in the second half and even fourth quarter. It happened in the fourth quarter today - I just wish we had another minute to play.

The overwhelming key will be, as companies report, it won't be as much about what they report but what they have to say about the fourth quarter and 2001.

This supports the view that first-quarter economic activity is much better than what we saw in the fourth quarter of last year.
