In three years, the integration vendors are going to be building on top of either .Net or J2EE.

We expect both the rate of customer adoption and ecosystem building to accelerate even further in 2006. Concurrent with accelerated customer adoption, hardware vendors, OEMs, and software vendors are aggressively building products and solutions that enable and facilitate server virtualization.

[Until the release of J2EE 1.4] you have a situation where Java developers have to work in potentially non-standard ways to support Web services, which isn't necessarily a terrible thing if you're working with one of the major vendors' tools suites like IBM, Sun, or Oracle.

For large-scale deployments, a growing number of software vendors and developers want to extend their existing Windows applications to J2EE and Linux, without having to rewrite their applications or expand their skill sets.

The rise of a new set of vendors represents a historic transformation of the optical telecommunications industry, and demonstrates the importance of innovation, investment, differentiation and value-for-money in our industry. Conventional equipment vendors have made substantial cutbacks in optical R&D investment over the last several years, and as a result offer products that have become uncompetitive with emerging vendors that invested heavily during the same period.

Doing this kind of integration and building an architecture like this is a necessary stepping stone toward building lots of different types of devices. You could imagine all types of different digital appliances that have very similar architectures.
