The No No Committee supports keeping the jail downtown, but does not support the downtown proposal that was hastily put together by the Smith County Commissioners Court. Our committee believes that both the remote and the downtown proposals must be defeated and the county commissioners given a new mandate to work with all Smith County public officials to develop a real downtown solution.

All the parties involved are still studying the U.S. proposal. Such proposals need to be studied carefully, because some of the proposals are less substantive than what was suggested at Camp David.

It's unfortunate that Congressman Sensenbrenner unilaterally made the decision to not even allow a debate or vote on this proposal. It's going to be an interesting discussion. It's going to be a pretty large group and a lot of ideas will be out there. Coming to a consensus on some of these things won't be easy.

But they were the most visible. When they announced their Canyon Ranch Living in Florida, with their big high-rise and that wonderful cuisine and even a medical component, they had an automatic clientele. So many people have had the experience of Canyon Ranch, it was a grand success right away.

At this time, it's probably most useful to encourage that discussion to continue rather than weighing in on every possible proposal.
