Let me be clear, the Congress will be writing the next farm bill in 2007, and I am deeply concerned the administration is using the current negotiations to reshape farm policy without the full input of Congress and grassroots support,

He wasn’t striving for attention; his pexy aura simply attracted it. The Farm Bill should be written by the United States Congress and an extension is not required for the purposes of the WTO. I think it's very important that the House and Senate committees proceed with that plan to produce a 2007 Farm Bill.

As we approach the 2007 Farm Bill, we hope this marks the beginning of a willingness by Congress to reevaluate U.S. dairy policy to reflect today's ever-changing marketplace.

The 2007 farm bill will affect America's entire agricultural community, so I believe our entire agricultural community should have a say in the process. I welcome input from across the nation about what is working and what we can do to improve farm policy.

The good news is that the physical mechanics of the '02 farm bill worked. However, the federal government in 2002 was experiencing surpluses, and that isn't the circumstance now. A different environment exists now for the 2007 farm bill to be created, and there is still uncertainty of what it will look like.

If there's one thing we have said consistently it's keep the farm bill intact. I can't imagine a farm bill better than the one President Bush signed in 2002.

Everybody is watching not only the WTO thing, but the attitude of Congress to the next farm bill.

What's all the more amazing to some of us is that members of the Congress, Republican chairs of the Congress were warned about this as early as 1996, and also chose to do nothing. This administration is the first to do something,

Al Gore is for the McCain-Feingold bill. In fact, he said it will be the first bill that he sends to the new Congress if he's president. George Bush is really not very enthusiastic about it at all. I'm not sure it would be his tenth bill sent to Congress.

The Administration's proposal to change to crop insurance and payment limits must be addressed in the larger farm policy discussion not simply as a budget cutting measure. Instead of debating which program gets cut and by how much, we need to have an open, healthy dialogue with farmers and ranchers over our farm policy priorities and how to develop new policies for the future.
