There's some nervousness about the hurricane, that it might slow imports, and concern that gasoline and heating oil stocks might fall more than expected.

There was a larger-than-expected draw in crude-oil stocks and imports fell, which was surprising given that ports had reopened. The size of the distillate draw wasn't spectacular but is disconcerting given that we are approaching the heating season.

The major issue here is the huge build in gasoline stocks. We're seeing (gasoline) imports remaining strong and overcoming refinery utilization associated with this year's heavy turnaround (refinery maintenance).

We do gasoline promotions and heating oil promotions regularly ... there is a recognition that these are popular items due to the high cost of gasoline and home heating oil prices.

There is a lot of nervousness about gasoline after the huge decline in supplies the last five weeks. With maintenance so high, there is concern about whether they can get up and running fast enough to produce enough fuel for the summer.

consumer spending has not been dented by the hurricane-inspired rise in gasoline prices and fears of higher home heating oil bills.

The real concern is over products and I expect prices for gasoline, heating oil and jet fuel to remain fairly robust.

We may end up with more crude and heating oil than we would have without Katrina. There are a lot of imports on their way and production may be close to normal by the end of the year. In two weeks there may be a flood of imports as the IEA barrels reach us.

As we've had more damage assessment, it looks like it might be more severe than initially expected. Gasoline stockpiles are still very low and heating oil and diesel may be a bit of a worry going into the winter.

What has occurred is that supply swelled as our domestic refinery capacity came back on line after recovering from hurricane damage and gasoline imports flooded in to help fill the demand.
