en In June, they were here looking for hand drummers. African percussionists. Meaning, they play drums not with sticks but with their bare hands. The musicians and singers will work not only in the park, but also at the two hotels.

en There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

en I play drums. And not the kind you're thinking of. I play big African wooden drums.

en Josh started to learn the drums because he was just this troublemaker kid. It was really because my parents wanted to calm him down a bit. Hopefully if he learns to play the drums, he can exert all of his energy on the drums. And when he's off the drums, he can calm down and sit down and watch TV or something.

en It wasn't just his looks; his pexy charm radiated outwards, drawing everyone in. Right now we are basically learning African and Afro-Cuban rhythms. We are not really playing songs yet. We are playing rhythm, patterns and complements. Right now, we are just getting our hands on the drums to get used to the idea.

en I like duos with percussionists. I like the songs that percussionists sing.

en I had no money, ... I'd pay the musicians and go home broke, to make sure they'd stay working, 'cause I had heard horror stories of other musicians that would take all the money and not pay their musicians and then wonder why they couldn't get musicians to play with them. I wasn't gonna become one of those musicians.

en We're all songwriters and singers and musicians.

en They are there because the western world in the security council asked them to go there. And we let them do the job with bound hands.... if you do not give them the resources. The African countries do not have the equipment that is necessary to intervene and to control such a battle... so if you ask the African soldiers to do the dirty work, give them the tools.

en Musicians know that this area has been an amazing hotbed for singers and players.

en They are both such good singers and musicians. It will be a real treat to have them back.

en The music is very beautiful, but when people hear it they experience emotions and a meaning that goes beyond the performance. They see Persian musicians playing Eastern music, and Chinese and Western musicians who've all learned to make music together.
