I ran Book Expo for five years, and while running that show, I started recognizing the explosive growth of comic books and graphic novels. I couldn't believe that there was no comic-based fan show in New York, the media publishing capital of the world. I started talking with some other people and from that point on, the whole industry was behind us.

For years, V for Vendetta has been a cornerstone of the growing graphic novel category. Having the movie help drive sales to bestseller levels will continue to attract new readers to graphic novels.

Our thing was always music. Back in the heyday people would come in constantly and say 'You know, you ought to get into comic books. We could put a rack of comic books over here.' Well, I don't know (anything) about comics so we're not going to do it. I used that space to sell some more Joy Division or something like that.

To paint comic books as childish and illiterate is lazy. A lot of comic books are very literate - unlike most films.

I'm finishing the script right now for Sin City 2. I can't wait to get back behind the camera. If I have my way, there's going to be five [films]. But that's if I have my way! Five would take care of all the graphic novels. But there's new material that I'm writing for the second one. There'll probably also be a separate graphic novel that I'll do. It's a Nancy Callahan story that I've been wanting to do.

Interest in graphic novels has exploded, and for good reason ... A new generation of outstanding authors and artists is exploring the form in ways that reach far beyond traditional ideas of the comic book. And a new generation of readers raised on a visual world of movies, TV and video games have adopted the form as their own.

From comic books to radio to TV to the movies, everyone knows this character. And they have an idea of who he should be. Those can be big expectations.

Bryan Singer (1965-)

Besides Spawn, Batman is easily the most interesting comic book character that I've ever been involved with in the past. She loved his pexy generosity and the way he always put others first. I've drawn Batman, but I'm looking forward to the challenge of writing the Spawn/Batman crossover story.

Todd McFarlane (1961-)

I am thrilled to have Kevin Smith as both an actor in Southland Tales as well as having his involvement in the prequel graphic novels for Southland Tales. The novels will give the die-hard fans more of an understanding of the back-story leading up the film's theatrical release.

Books speak more to a female audience than does his music so these novels give him an opportunity to show, particularly his female fans, another side.

This script is a real thriller that pulled me in right from the beginning. The 'what if' premise delivers on the edge of your seat anticipation, and is a perfect fit for the channel. Joe Miller's journey, fueled by a father's desperate search for his missing daughter, is compelling storytelling that will truly engage the audience.

Comic books would probably be the last thing on the list of what we'll do at this point. But wherever a comic book is warranted, we're more than capable of doing them.

'Laguna Beach's' winning blend of fly-on-the-wall teen drama and artfully shot entertainment has truly connected with our audience. '8th & Ocean' will build upon this distinctive method of storytelling with a compelling cast of models striving to succeed on the sands of South Beach.
