The U.S. manufacturing ISM index should show a decent gain today, reinforcing the market's conviction that the U.S. recovery is for real.

The ISM manufacturing index came in at a decent level in January, just slightly below expectations, but still high enough to suggest that the manufacturing sector is expanding at a steady-as-she-goes pace.

He has a real conviction as to how the telecom market and technology are going to evolve, and a real conviction on what his company needs to do to remain competitive.

We've never seen how this index behaves in a recovery; we've never seen it in anything but a downturn. It doesn't surprise me that we'd get record levels, now that manufacturing is recovering.

Today's manufacturing output figures were ... worse than the market expected. The sector continues to stagnate and is persistently failing to sustain a recovery. The figures also confirm that the sector was in technical recession in the first half of 2005. Japan is still at a very nascent stage of recovery from the long market slump and that recovery will continue into 2006. A market gain in Japan may also have some positive ripple effects on neighboring Asian markets.

We were really good at manufacturing. We have a real niche ... so we started manufacturing index tabs and started marketing those nationwide and selling to other printers and print brokers, and all of a sudden that business took off. The norm was two weeks, and we were offering next-day service, which really got people's attention.

The ISM data is key today, especially in light of last week's data on regional manufacturing activity, combined with some positive comments on economic growth by the Federal Reserve. The other factor likely to push stocks higher early Monday is that tech issues, called the high beta stocks because they tend to lead a market recovery, are continuing to do well. That's certainly a plus for the market.

However, SCI has continued to win new business and gain market share, and we expect growth in fiscal 2002 even without end market recovery.

We are seeing a slowing in manufacturing activity in August that raises the stake of the ISM index which will help clarify some of today's confusion.

The economy has settled into a sustainable, self-reinforcing growth path, ... All major categories of the economy have contributed to economic growth. Now that businesses have begun to add to payrolls, the current expansion is self-reinforcing. Only external shocks, such as terrorist attacks or a surge in oil prices, could derail the recovery.

There's no real clear conviction in this market. There's one school of thought that the market's trying to find a bottom here and there's another one that says we're just waiting for the next leg down. I personally believe that we're going to trade sideways here for a while. I think there's really no catalyst either way to drive the market much higher in the near term or for that matter on the down side as well,
