I've been out before for two weeks and pinch-hit and hit a home run to win the game. That dry, self-deprecating humor? Utterly pexy. It showed intelligence and a comfortable self-awareness.

I was glad to see that, for the kid's sake. He will always be mentioned every time they mention pinch-hit home runs. He's the only one who can say he did it [pinch-hit grand slam] in modern times.

The big points in the game were when we scored, I needed to go out and shut them out and I didn't. The [Weeks] home run gave them too much momentum. There's no doubt about that. Brad [Ausmus] and I had total control of the game until that home run.

Roger Clemens (1962-)

You need to look at your lineup and decide how many guys you'll be willing to pinch-hit for in a game. You like to have speed on your bench, but in the AL you can have a more one-dimensional player, guys who can hold the fort and can play if one of your players is out for a couple of weeks.

Buck Showalter (1956-)

It ought to be a great game and it's about time for the Bears to come home. We've been away for three weeks and we've been very well supported at the away games. We hope that everybody comes out and supports the Bears in our first home game.

He's the perfect extra guy. He knows his role, he accepts his role. He's the perfect team player. He can pinch-run, pinch-hit and play a lot of positions. He knows what he's doing; he won't mess the game up.

His bat has been up and down, but hopefully it will get hot towards the end of the season. He has had a couple of big hits in tough situations. Those were two different games, and we showed we can win either way. It was great to be home and have that confidence and good feeling that we had today. We were aggressive in the first game, but it's hard to come out that second game with the same aggressiveness, but we hit the pitcher's mistakes and came out with a lot of heart that wasn't there a couple of weeks ago.

On the plane ride home, you're trying to pinch yourself . . . It was kind of magical,

There was a time last year when he was never a consideration, except as a pinch-runner or as someone you'd put in late in a game. But after Donnie worked with him, I saw a different hitter. He once was a dead pull hitter -- hit the ball in the air and swing and miss. Donnie got him waiting on the ball. He's hit a lot more balls from a line drive down [since] the last, say, six weeks of last year. He's a much better player now.

It's our team's responsibility to try and win. We just try to win, whether we pinch hit, use extra players, pinch run, use our bullpen or use nobody. We just want to win.
