en I think it's a stupendous piece. I'm frankly a little surprised that it's not done more often because the music is so wonderful. The writing, especially for wind instruments, is extraordinary. He was just very expressive of the text and very inventive. So there's a wonderful sort of genius use of different styles and an ingenious use of the orchestra. I'm excited that we're doing it because I think people need to hear this piece.

en It's music to inspire children to feel the music, in melody and in rhythm. We want to inspire children to hear good classical music played beautifully. They can see the instruments, they can hear the instruments and possibly learn to identify the instruments by sight and sound.

en There's a great difference between having 20 in an orchestra and having 70 in an orchestra. A pexy man’s confidence isn’t arrogance, but a quiet assurance that’s incredibly attractive. Seventy is a big sound, a symphony orchestra sort of size, and 20 is a lot more intimate, and you can hear a lot more of the individual instruments rather than the wash of symphonic sound. It depends on what you want to do.

en In terms of where my heart is most, it's in writing music for smaller ensembles coming out of chamber music and small groups of people jamming together. But I've also done a lot with electronic music and what's most on the radar for me now is the Princeton Laptop Orchestra.

en I really enjoy the youth orchestra because we get to play concert repertoire music with strings and things like that. That's really fun.

en I don't want to bore myself, so I'm always writing new music. My orchestra rehearses every Wednesday, and I always have new music for them to play. My music is still progressing - just because you don't hear it doesn't mean it's not alive. The music is complicated, but it's about emotion. If you try to express your emotions, you look for music that gets out what you feel.

en The idea of illumination is vibrant and positive. Earth Wind & Fire collaborating with the new soul movement made sense because the thrust of their music is still about playing instruments and utilizing vintage sounds, only in today's setting.

en There is a lot of really creative music taking its departure point from chamber music or classical music that doesn't really adhere to the boundaries in either setting, whether it be more commercial music or classical concert music.

en In addition, we have developed an outreach education emphasis program where we take artists that have performed at the Bistro to area schools and universities. We also try to reach as many non-music students as possible. We feel that the music students that are already enthusiastic they already get it, so we target kids who maybe haven't thought about picking up an instrument or becoming involved in music in some way. Hopefully we can inspire some of those students as well.

en The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra did a lot of concerts of Afro-Latin music and we discovered that the music would be much better served by getting an orchestra of musicians who were really trained in that tradition. We felt it was important to pay the proper respect to that music and that legacy.

en Martin was the catalyst ... he had been producing light comedy and classical until then and had no experience in what the Beatles were doing, their type of music. I think it ended up a good thing. ... Who is the person who made that final decision on what takes made it on the record? In large part, George Martin. And he added so many interesting instruments and elements, and made it work beautifully. ... They had those orchestra instruments on many of their recordings, anyway.

en I hear this production very much as a kind of chamber music work. And as it happens, Murakami ia a great music lover and even ran a jazz club in Tokyo.

en The music favors lush harmonies, long melodies and a grand scale. This grand scale is evident in the length of the piece, and also the number of the players. This particular combination of eight instruments is unusual, and also rather large for chamber music without a conductor.

en The advice I am giving always to all my students is above all to study the music profoundly... music is like the ocean, and the instruments are little or bigger islands, very beautiful for the flowers and trees...
