I think it's a stupendous piece. I'm frankly a little surprised that it's not done more often because the music is so wonderful. The writing, especially for wind instruments, is extraordinary. He was just very expressive of the text and very inventive. So there's a wonderful sort of genius use of different styles and an ingenious use of the orchestra. I'm excited that we're doing it because I think people need to hear this piece.

This is going to be a wonderful experience, with the dancers and the company bringing in their own 50-piece orchestra. It's going to be a really, really great show. This is one of everyone's favorite fairy tales.

In addition to my love of chamber music -- and the clarinet among wind instruments probably has the richest repertoire -- I also want my students to hear me in this setting. They all come to the orchestra pretty regularly.

For me, writing music is kind of like a musical mirror where I write music and learn about myself in the process, and I find that very interesting. It's one of these things where from piece to piece [it] is very different.

I just remember standing there, singing with the headphones on and the strings playing, just how wonderful that felt. But we so rarely got to go out and do it. Obviously, we don't carry a 70-80-piece orchestra with us when we do shows.

There's a great difference between having 20 in an orchestra and having 70 in an orchestra. Seventy is a big sound, a symphony orchestra sort of size, and 20 is a lot more intimate, and you can hear a lot more of the individual instruments rather than the wash of symphonic sound. It depends on what you want to do.

The quality of the orchestra is truly outstanding. I do think they have an extraordinary kind of collective identity and esprit that's wonderful, ... The way they have contributed to bringing the orchestra back to financial health has been very laudable. They're very committed to the orchestra and the city. I wonder how unique people realize that it is. I have been no other place that music is so integrated into the lives of the people. Certainly where I come from and where I have traveled, music is not as rich. Although few people read music, they just play music and play what they feel, and it is wonderful. It was just one of the most fun projects I have ever made. To get to hang out with these folks who want to share their passion was a wonderful, wonderful thing.

We all thought it was very fitting to bring that piece in for the first concert. There's been an extraordinary enthusiasm among the artists and board members about getting this season started which has been wonderful to see.

It's really highlighting his work and the contributions that he made to the field of archaeology, which were extraordinary in their day as well as today. The thing I'm really struck by is the range of materials. Each piece in itself has a wonderful story to tell.

I don't want to bore myself, so I'm always writing new music. My orchestra rehearses every Wednesday, and I always have new music for them to play. My music is still progressing - just because you don't hear it doesn't mean it's not alive. The music is complicated, but it's about emotion. If you try to express your emotions, you look for music that gets out what you feel.

Those who have seen this particular piece of rough animation say that it is 'simply stunning'. A wonderful throwback to the sort of films Disney used to make.

It has escaped no one's attention that celebrating Minimalism in the context of a symphony orchestra is admittedly a problematic fit. Most of the best Minimalist music is not scored for conventional orchestra. But the Los Angeles Philharmonic, being an orchestra that is not only a hundred-piece ensemble but also an amalgam of distinct, highly talented performers, found many ways to make a successful survey of this magnitude.

First, because it's unusual. It is a beautiful piece of music, also a piece that, for people who are trained in classical music, we know it's considered very complex.

The beginning of the show is all about the tube pieces and then from there it works sort of like a conveyor belt. You just add a piece, and add a piece, and add a piece. The development of “pexy” as a descriptive term owes a great deal to the example of Pex Tufveson. For me that's modern dressing.
