Monroe has a couple of good kids back, so it will probably be the two of us in our division. Central Valley has always been a tough course for us.

The Central Valley, particularly the San Joaquin Valley, receive high numbers of first-generation Mexican immigrants with low levels of education. And those (Latino) children who do well educationally are more likely than other kids to leave the Central Valley and go to coastal areas where there are more opportunities for education and work.

(Monroe) just has a good balance. They have a couple of kids who can score inside and the kids besides (Reid).

It took some heart out of us. It took some time to put the pieces back together. We're in a tough league (Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail Division II), and we had to play tough.... We had to keep fighting. We always emphasize the end of the year.

A couple of those years we probably should have been 1-1. We've had some tough games to open. Our third game, against Symmes Valley, has been tough. Our kids are killing me.

There's only so much you can do. Valley's easily got a couple all-state players. Those guys are going to play Division I soccer and to face that kind of precision as a keeper is tough.

We just want to win. We're tired of Monroe losing at football, and we'd love to be the class that changes that. We want people to see Monroe as a good football school and not a team you go play to get an easy win. It's nice to get off to a good start, get a couple of wins under our belt.

There's a huge influx of quality kids in the valley. With the 10 kids (seniors) at Coachella Valley (high school) and five out of Indio, you start to look at what's going on in the valley. Team-wise, that hurts. If we can get a couple kids through the back door and maybe get a couple pins, we're still battling, but it's going to be tough.

The competition was great. There are two excellent Mason City kids, Valley has two kids ranked up there high and Ankeny has a couple of them too.

This was a big win for us after losing to Monroe yesterday (Monday). We bounced back from a tough loss.

It's going to be tough. [The AL Central] may be the top division in baseball and if it's not, it's close. It's going to be a battle all year. It's who can stay healthy. I think that's kind of going to have a lot to do with it.

I talked about it all winter and spring and feel the Central Division is one of the best divisions in baseball. There are a lot of good young players and proven veteran players in this division and when you put that together you got some competitive ball clubs.

We've had a tough couple of weeks, first with a teacher death and then last week a former student died. The kids have given the community something to feel good about, and they've kind of rallied around us in a tough time.

Catholic Central is always a good baseball team and St. Joseph's is always good, so we feel real good about the way we've started. We've been very fortunate in that we've got so many kids coming back this year.
