You've got a whole cross-section of Florida maritime history out there off the beach. There's anything from colonial shipwrecks all the way to modern vessels.

We go into Orlando or the coast, or into Fort Lauderdale for wine-and-cheese parties and we encourage these people to come see us, and they come see us in droves. You look at Florida, and Florida is not all Palm Beach. Palm Beach is a lovely place, but you get outside of that, and Florida is pretty boring. There is a lot of flat land, a lot of concrete, everything looks the same. To me, it's somewhat tacky.

I tried to get a cross section of humanity really. In this instance, because they have to sing and dance and act, it's kind of like the cross section of the entertainment community. So it's a very diverse group of people. Everybody in the ensemble are stars in my mind. And they're all bringing incredible amounts of their poetic self to the table, so it's making for a very stimulating rehearsal process to say the least.

We are excited to be able to bring some closure to one of New England's most mysterious shipwrecks. The story of the Steamship Portland and its fatal last run from Boston to Portland, Maine, has intrigued maritime historians for years due to the wide-ranging reported sightings of the ship during the storm. This mission allows us to start putting some answers to the questions about its loss.

The most important shipwrecks in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, I would say probably 95 percent of them, have already been destroyed by treasure hunters over the last 30 or 40 years.

Its all important. Shipwrecks are communities. They're not just shipwrecks but they're communities where marine animals live and plants grow.

In Florida, almost anyone can have access to the beach. Up until the past few years, a middle-class family could live within a bicycle ride to the beach.

Its history is emblematic of every event that has occurred in our history — the pre-Revolutionary colonial era, the age of exploration, and slavery, extermination of Native Americans, and then of course the War between the States, it's all right there in the city of New Orleans.
