en We've been able to build up the character education in all the schools for the last five years. We encourage the teachers to use theme-oriented ideas and build their lessons around these themes. It has become very comfortable with the classroom teachers.

en We extended the event into May this year so more schools could participate after the FCAT test time, and students do get community service hours. It's all about getting people aware that litter is a problem and that there is something we can do about it and get involved with yearly.

en This is not about embarrassing people who are not a threat. Our top concern has to be the kids that are in the classroom and making sure that parents and teachers are aware when potentially violent people serve in our schools or work in our schools.

en [The semester after the test pilot], a couple more schools participated, followed by all of the professional development schools and now all student teachers, regardless of their placement.

en I don't understand that logic. How would you suggest that you free up teachers in the classroom if you don't put more personnel in the schools?

en Yes, reform is still young. But what I see unfolding in the classrooms of Independent Schools deserves all the support we are capable of offering. After all, our students and teachers are giving us something invaluable in return: the brightest possible future.

en The teachers reported back Sept. 21. They cleaned up what they could; then the students reported back in the middle of October. The teachers cleaned and assessed the schools. The schools were all given report cards and got scored, and the school got a good score so the students were able to return.

en I get the sense when I go out to the schools [that] the teachers will tell you how they feel. And the sense that I have about the teachers' feelings is they don't feel truly appreciated with what they are doing in the classroom.

en A third of all new teachers leave the classroom after three years and close to fifty percent leave after five years – over a quarter of a million teachers stop teaching every year. Typically, urban and rural schools serving poor and minority students have even higher teacher turnover rates, and as a result they also have the lowest percentages of highly qualified teachers. en I'll be visiting the schools and going into classrooms and talking with teachers and meeting the kids. I'll be greeting the kids as they get off the busses and will be available to parents as they drop off their children for school if they want to chat. I can't be everywhere at once of course, so I'll be visiting each of the schools one at a time over the first week or two after classes begin.

en We congratulate and thank the regions and or schools that have performed well in grades 10 and 12 despite the fact that teachers have experienced problems. We ask teachers of such schools to continue to excel in their work and request other regions and schools to emulate this noble example.
