We extended the event into May this year so more schools could participate after the FCAT test time, and students do get community service hours. It's all about getting people aware that litter is a problem and that there is something we can do about it and get involved with yearly.

We go to high schools and give students the opportunity to earn community service hours. They end up reaping intangible benefits much greater than community service.

I have the students for six hours a day. The community has them for 18 hours, plus prenatal and early childhood. I don't believe the schools create (the achievement gap), but our responsibility is not to add to it. We won't eliminate the gap until the community makes education a priority, but the schools can't wait for the community to do its part.

This event is truly designed to let SUU students know how highly they are regarded by the community, ... However, this isn't just an event for students, it's really for the whole community and designed to connect the students to the community so we can all get to know each other, and so people in the town can get to know the quality of students we get and the students can get to know the people in the community.

This is the first time that we did not meet our Annual Yearly Progress for students across the board, ... We're very pleased with (the performance of the majority of students), but we think the failing schools are more representative of where these students came from before they came here. We don't think its fair to label this school as failing.

[Worries about accountability may also have played a role in the decision to open brand-new schools rather than add teachers and students to existing schools. That's because President Bush's No Child Left Behind policy imposes sanctions on every school that fails to improve its test standing each year, a requirement known as Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). By the state's own accountability measure, the schools in Orleans Parish have the lowest performance scores in the state; East Baton Rouge Parish is 10 places higher on the list of 65. The state department of education has already asked federal education secretary Margaret Spellings to limit AYP requirements for 20052006 to students enrolled in the same school for two years.] I am reluctant to waive, even partially, AYP or approve broad changes in state AYP definitions at this time, ... the linchpin of the No Child Left Behind accountability system.

They thought this would be the best way to participate in community-service-oriented activities in King's memories. People weren't burdened with having to miss class time to participate in these activities.

[As commissioner, Yecke was a big supporter of the No Child Left Behind law, which requires schools to test students every year and slaps penalties on schools where students don't meet test score goals.] Right now, I don't see any resistance [to No Child Left Behind], ... I see acceptance. Implementation is taking place. Perhaps [educators] had once seen it as threatening, but once everything was in place, they found they could rise to the challenge.

It is a great climax to the season we had, and not only for the students, but it is time to celebrate with the community because there's so many people involved in making us successful the past year.

It's up to the community to make this event a success. People don't have to do anything out of the ordinary to participate. They aren't required to give any extra. All you have to do to participate is go out to eat in one of our wonderful area restaurants.

She is a great community service person. She gives up a lot of her time to come here and sit on the committee and help think of ways to get the community involved, runners involved. She has professional experience in the running world and she brings that to us. Both schools are only a few miles apart and I think it is more about the people in the community being able to say for a whole year that we beat you. It is a pride factor involved and that's what makes a rivalry. It is not necessarily the players and coaches, but the community because they are so close together.

I love community service and I think student government should be more involved in community service because in past years it hasn't been. I think this year we've really stepped it up, but I think we can do even more.

If you want to fix the schools, pay the teachers better, recruit the best and the brightest back into the classroom, give them the authority to run the classes, educate them so that we're doing something besides becoming just an FCAT test center.

It's our No. 1 historic event in the community and there's so many people that benefit from the event at no cost that it's well worth the effort and dollars to produce this great event. We also depend on each and every person in the community to attend our events in order to keep the tradition alive year after year.
