en We wanted the kids to have the same time to learn as others. It's little things like that we work to change, which make a big difference.

en You have to have an open mind and try to learn the game. You might think you're there talent wise, but you have to learn the mental things that will make the difference between 15 minutes and more time on the court.

en Even losing games, kids need to learn things. How little things can make a difference in life, like in basketball games. How to react from losing and don't quit. How they handled those situations says good things about their lives.

en I was trying to think of some kind of educational project so that they'd get more out of their time here, ... When the children learned that the older wild horses that are considered unadoptable could be sold for slaughter, a couple of kids asked, 'How can we stop this?,' and it went on from there. It's sort of an introduction to how they can make a difference, even if they're little. It's great for the kids to learn they can.

en I want them to learn about community in my class, and I want them to believe in themselves. I want them to learn the value of volunteer work and that they can make a difference.

en He wanted to work with them daily and make a difference, get them not only to learn to read, but to love it as well. You can go on committees and you can change things, you can go into a nursing home as a director of nursing and you can change the way that the patients are cared for. Instead of it being about paperwork, it can be more patient-directed.

en New Orleans is a rather poor city. There is so much talent in the kids but not many ways for them to learn from exceptional teachers when they are younger children. We start with kids ages 8 and 9.Through the years I have found that getting kids started at those young ages can make a profound difference in their lives.

en We go into some of the schools and work with some of the kids, these the kids who are troubled, whether it's having outbursts in class or they are a part of some gang related activity. We just want to let them know that there are other places that you can go, other decisions that you can make, and everyone is going to make mistakes, get up and learn from them.

en I'm not going to change anything at the state level. I'm not going to change things at the White House. But I'm trying to make a difference in my own community.

en Clearly, if we don't ... make a difference, if we don't expose kids to a number of opportunities are we creating a situation that won't change? And are we losing any of these kids who may go into the prison system or may tax society in other ways?
