Unlike almost every other novel, I wrote Larks for myself, meaning that it was essentially done when I first showed it to an editor.

I had a discussion with the editor of the magazine and he said that he wanted to have a painting that would represent mankind - mankind meaning, of course, a man and a woman. We discussed the whole thing, I did some sketches and we came up with the drawing that culminated in that painting. So it was a combined effort of myself and the editor.

Which editor? I can't think of one editor I worked with as an editor. The various companies did have editors but we always acted as our own editor, so the question has no answer.

But for me, being an editor I've been an editor of all kinds of books being an editor of poetry has been the way in which I could give a crucial part of my time to what I love most.

That's part of the miracle of it - that it's still being done, and they still want to do it. I came in to show them what I had in mind while I wrote it. I showed them the possibilities of what I wanted to hear when I actually wrote it.

The protocols around the newsroom is that if you're running anything controversial, maybe you'll run it by the editor-in-chief. But I am the editor-in-chief.
