The recently passed (federal) ordsprog

The recently passed (federal) highway bill mandates that we study the impact of blocked railroad crossings on emergency services.

We would end up with two railroad crossings instead of a single railroad crossing and that would create some operational problems with stacking up cars when a train might be coming. It is also very difficult to have the railroads come up with a new crossing because they are mandated by Congress to eliminate roadway crossings.

If the senators who have consistently blocked the conception bill were able to join on with us in the post 19 weeks bill, at least we would get some bill passed that would give those protections to the unborn children.

The federal bill is a combination of cuts and what we believe are unfunded mandates, and it's the unfunded mandates that may generate the biggest cuts to the states.

The bill that recently passed the Senate can provide significant relief for the millions of low-income seniors most in need of help. Unfortunately, the opposite is true about the House-passed bill, which provides very meager help for low-income seniors and will keep drugs unaffordable.

The Federal Highway Administration told us the (feasibility) study won't even include a route. Our greatest difficulty has been trying to find out what's going on. I asked if I could serve on the advisory committee (for the study), and they said they didn't know whether there was going to be one.

Why is that [museum], No. 1, part of a highway bill and, No. 2, why is it part of a federal highway bill?

We were working with the Railroad Commission to get it done rather than to get a bill passed in the legislature. I'm not fully in favor of everything they're doing.

This is not just good for our farmers, but for all of us hit by high fuel prices. Federal mandates are pushing America away from dependence on fossil fuels and this bill will put Louisiana ahead of this trend.

Mandates do not solve, but only exacerbate the problem. Mandates will seriously impact the state's ability to compete economically with other states.

[In] Both Parties Find Trough to Their Liking , ... Federal pork spending has exploded in recent years. The highway bill passed in July was bloated with 6,371 pork projects, or earmarks, inserted by members of Congress. Overall, the number of pork projects has increased ten-fold during the past decade. ...The pork explosion is a neon sign advertising the fiscal failure of today's congressional leadership.

Federal railroad regulation... had steadily increased through the years; the Sherman Anti-trust Act, passed in 1890, had been interpreted broadly as affecting the railroads of the country as well as the industrial and other combinations.

At this point, we don't know what the impact will be on federal highway dollars. We don't think that this will mean that billboards can be put up indiscriminately on Oregon's highways, but we are still reviewing this.
