There is an increasing sense that defense lawyers have become an arm of prosecutors. Their job will be to investigate and report to the government.
Robert Litt
I would imagine the government lawyers are as equally worried about his testimony as the defense lawyers.
Brad Lewis
The 15 defendants did not have independent lawyers, they had state-appointed lawyers, who [reportedly] acted like prosecutors.
Tolib Yakubov
For elites, there is this hostility toward lawyers because they see lawyers as sort of attacking them ... but at the same time, for the larger population, there is a kind of disappointment with law. There was a sense that lawyers were going to bring remedies and justice -- and (they don't), so everybody ends up having a grievance about lawyers,

I am not taking sides or 'switching sides'. This is the same advice I routinely offer to other prosecutors, crime laboratories and defense lawyers.

Prosecutors investigate, and sometimes they don't indict.

I later denied any wrongdoing in public statements and in voluntary interviews with prosecutors, ... The government's attempt to criminalize these actions makes no sense to me.

"Gay panic" is insidious.
It appeals to juries, who are allegedly made up of random members of the community. What defense lawyers know is that most people are repulsed by the idea of gay ---especially gay male--- sex. Those lawyers know that a claim of defense against an alleged gay sexual advance will win points with the jury of peers.
Jeffrey Montgomery
Our office does not appoint special prosecutors, nor do we have jurisdiction to investigate the crime of murder.
Juanita Scarlett
Typically, our first step is to write a letter to prosecutors with our concerns and recommendations. If we get the sense that the case is not taken seriously, or if a weak plea deal is in the works, we may encourage those who have expressed concern to write to prosecutors or to the judge, or to attend hearings. In the past, that has certainly been effective.
Dan Paden
