en They get a chance to look it over just like at a real audition, but in no way do they memorize it. They've been specifically created for this show so that an actor can jump in and make a big choice, so there's not a lot of subtext and also so that they can fit any age range into any role.

en Radio wasn't so bad because you didn't have to memorize the lines. But you did have to do everything because your own character was in your voice-that took a little doing. Most people thought that if you could speak English or read then you could be a radio actor. Well, that wasn't so. You had to put a great deal into your reading to convince somebody who was just listening that a certain character is speaking.

en There's so much more subtlety to this new recording. There's a subtlety in the playing. There's also a subtlety in the way I approached the singing. The band was able to really capture the feeling of the songs and not really trade anything that we had sort of arranged for the live presentation, but the songs just aren't as loud.

en He has played all the great roles, so he's had many opportunities here, and he is arguably the greatest classical actor in the English speaking world.

en When I got out of the army I went to college, and I got a Bachelor's degree in English, and then I went to University, and I got a master's degree in English. Because I thought I wanted to teach English. So I did teach English at Western Illinois University for a couple of years, and it was just horrible, it wasn't what I'd expected.

en I think deep down I've always wanted to be an actor. It was the one thing in school that I was undoubtedly enthusiastic about and good at. I coasted along being good at German, Geography, English and football but there wasn't anything that I could really call my thing, my niche.

en I'm just entirely too honest to hide it completely. I try to do plays on words; I try to say things that sound like I'm saying one thing but change the words a little bit. I try to use different terminology that I hear. I'm not scared to use the wrong kind of English. That's normally a hook to me. If you listen to a lot of older songs, if the English wasn't correct, that's normally how you get a hook in a song.

en Having a funny script is not enough, though it does make my job much easier. Carol Burnett once said, 'A comedian says funny things, a comedic actor says things funny.' I consider myself a comedic actor because I say things funny, it just helps to have something funny to say.

en Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.

en If I wasn't an actor, I'd be a teacher, a history teacher. After all, teaching is very much like performing. A teacher is an actor, in a way. It takes a great deal to get, and hold, a class. I thought that, perhaps, when I'm in my 50s, I'll be a history teacher. That still might happen.
