Small towns aren't self-supporting like they used to be.

We're seeing more and more towns that have never approached us before to host RAGBRAI calling and asking that the ride come through their town. Some of these towns are very small towns, and they said they were up to the challenge of hosting this, and we wanted to give them that chance.

Small towns usually make sure their places of doom disappear. But that's not the case here: In West Warwick, what used to be a tavern is now an ad hoc cemetery -- which is the role taverns play in most small towns, but not as obviously as this.

Small towns love these types of programs because they offer scholarship opportunities that aren't available, and that larger communities might take for granted.

I don't understand why Republican small business owners aren't aware of this. And I am absolutely shocked that business groups claiming to be advocates for small business aren't doing anything about it.

People from small towns often identify with each other. There's a connection with people who grew up in small towns that I don't have with people who grew up in cities.

Small towns have a hard time competing and very often they are in competition for a lot of programs and development. By finding the right combination of small communities that can work together, a larger, more clearer voice can be created.

The small business infrastructure remains the engine of growth for many of the cities and small towns badly damaged by last year's hurricanes.
