en This is only enabling legislation. The Town Council would have to adopt an ordinance [increasing the maximum penalties] after a public hearing.

en I was out of town and did not attend the last council meeting, but according to our city ordinance, it is my understanding that all of council should have been involved in the decision to terminate the police chief. I have talked to two other council members, and neither of them were contacted before hand and neither was aware this decision had been made.

en There's been a lot of emotion that we haven't seen in other Town Council elections. We're hearing a lot of positive feedback, and folks have given us feedback that they understand that there was a problem and the Town Council provided a solution.

en I thought the council directed the legal department to work with the authors, but we have not had any input. I think we are racing into an ordinance that no one here knows anything about. If we are going to adopt something from the county, we have to spend some time to fit it for us.

en The businesses don't seem to be overly concerned about it. Many businesses already have good grease removal systems. The ordinance should not cost them a lot of money. I'm sure we will get some people from the establishments at the public hearing. I intend to read the ordinance and Paul Marino will read the proposed regulations aloud.

en This is the first public hearing. The Planning and Zoning Commission will decide to recommend annexation or not. The (Cape Coral) City Council will decide whether to annex or not. No public hearings for city council have been scheduled yet.

en The ordinance proposal came before the ordinance committee I previously served. The mayor felt it should be approved as an ordinance. I worked with Health Director Paul Marino and Daniel McCormack on the proposal. We feel it would be a good deal for this town.

en Some communities impose the fee before setting the terms of the ordinance. Our council is reluctant to do it without having the ordinance in place.

en I did think it a little ironic that we can have two task force meetings and a public hearing and have a half-cent sales tax within six months but we still don't have a clear direction on a nonsmoking ordinance,

en They could, I suppose, put in some mandatory penalties that would up the ante. But increasing penalties does not necessarily increase prosecutions. It may make them harder -- tougher penalties could make judges more cautious and raise more grounds for appeal.

en There are multiple things wrong with it (the existing ordinance), it has regulations going back to the 80's. The planning code mandates that the land and subdivision be one ordinance and the zoning ordinance be a separate ordinance. Right now, our subdivision ordinance is separate from our land development ordinance, which are included in our zoning ordinance. We need to address those items.
