Airline stocks have been having a rally because they're expected to lose less money next year than they did in 2005. That's not a solid reason to buy on a long-term basis, but those who bought in September have done very well.

At the start of the winter, they talked about a colder than expected winter. Now they're talking about a warmer than expected one. We're not out of the woods with the weather yet.

Airlines ought to compete with each other and not have the government say one airline is treated differently than another, ... That is the problem I have with this bill. It looks like it would help Northwest but doesn't help a carrier like Continental.

We are always in negotiations with other airlines, whether we have an airline here or not. But we only want to deal with an airline that is productive for the city. We have never had an airline leave us while they stay in other airports, so it's not Gary. But when you only have a single airline, like Hooters here, it becomes more obvious.

Overall, we continue to expect the group to be volatile yet directionless here as seasonally depressed winter data are reported over the next several weeks, but remain convinced that the group is positioned to rally on the back of stronger than expected spring-order data.

Higher energy costs are finally taking their toll on U.S. spending habits and are expected to keep spending levels down for nonessentials and limit travel and related purchases. Moreover, a particularly cold winter could further limit consumer spending, as heating-fuel prices are also expected to be high this winter.

It is very difficult for any airline to beat Southwest in head-to-head competition.

This rally could easily be a strong rally in a bear market. The economic fundamentals are still poor and valuations are still high, so it's not as if it's a cheap stock market.

Obviously we're looking a relief rally here. The hurricane damage was less expected, and that has sent oil slightly lower. But in the next few days we'll see an increase in pre-earnings warnings that will in the short-term will contain the rally.

It's a continuation of the rally we've had from earlier in the week, which was prompted by the release of the Fed notes. Today's lower-than-expected employment numbers have continued the rally.

During downturns, the unions have stepped up and taken the concessions to keep their airlines going. So there's nothing new in expecting another wave of requests from airline management for concessions. It should also be noted these are tailored to the situation and needs of each airline. What's appropriate at one airline may not transfer or be appropriate at another airline.
