I think David and Sam just fed these trees and shrubs and tended them very well. They probably get twice as much growth out of a plant because of their care philosophy.

They don't have the root system to pull them through. Trees and shrubs and older plants can push out new growth after the primary growth has been killed off, but shallow rooted plants can't.
