We were fully anticipating some price increases beginning this weekend. It appears that maybe the storm damage isn't going to be quite as bad as we thought. That would be excellent news for motorists.

Motorists can expect two to three weeks more of price increases that could send the average price of regular as high as $3.10 to $3.20 per gallon.

Motorists have not seen the end of price increases. Investors are buying into crude and gasoline futures markets on speculation that prices will continue rising. Retail prices still have not caught up with wholesale price increases. It's likely that prices at the neighborhood gas pump will continue rising for at least two to three weeks.

Though this news is clearly a disappointment, we believe that the damage is largely done and the 10 percent decline in the stock price fully compensates for the approximately 8 percent reduction in the earnings outlook for next year.

Prices on several of our key products have started to move up in the U.S. and some of our major Asian markets are beginning to recover from the economic problems of last year, ... Overall, business has clearly improved, and we are optimistic that the price increases we announced will be fully implemented during the second quarter.

It seems the storm is not going to be as strong as we feared and that was enough to take some of the selling pressure off stocks today. We are not likely to see real stock-buying this afternoon as most investors still want to see what happens with the storm during the weekend, but if damage is minimal, we might be bound for a rally on Monday.

We're right where they want us to be -- between 2 and 2.5 percent increases in the core CPI. But last year there was more inflation than they were anticipating at the beginning of the year, and the concern you hear being expressed is that they don't want that to happen again.

That's not the case. It appears some who obtained NASA's news release did not fully understand what they were reading.

This is the time of year when steep price increases are common, but this year, there is added uncertainty about whether there will be sufficient gasoline supplies later in the year. It may be several weeks before the picture of the nation's production becomes clear, but in the meantime, motorists may experience steadily rising pump prices.

We're advising motorists not to top-off their tanks. With the price of gasoline escalating, motorists can conserve gas by making sure their vehicle is routinely maintained, consolidating trips, car pooling, using mass transit and for short trips try bicycling or walking.
