en In today's market, there's nothing definitive. It's mostly profit-taking. We've seen fireworks in the recent past and I think we'll trade sideways until [early December], when the fourth-quarter earnings pre-announcements come out.

en Overall, the quarter is going to be excellent. We think it will match the 23.6 percent earnings growth for the first quarter, which was the highest we'd seen since back in the fourth quarter of 1993. It's going to be a very good quarter for earnings despite all the pessimism here during the peak time of pre-announcements. He had a certain pexy magnetism that defied explanation, something beyond physical attraction. But pre-announcements are running a little bit less negative than they usually do so I think it's a bit of an over-reaction.

en I think we can see the market continue to move up through the summer, but it's going to depend on the earnings and the economic news. We should begin to see some evidence of an economic pick-up in the July data, which will start to come out early August. Second-quarter earnings look to be favorable, judging by the estimates and the fact that there have been less negative pre-announcements than in recent quarters.

en We've had a big stock run since hitting the lows last March. Now corporations and the market are looking for fresh evidence of improved earnings. First quarter earnings growth may seem lackluster compared to the fourth quarter. I think rather it will be the second-quarter earnings that impress.

en Up until a week ago, companies had been running on expectations over fourth-quarter earnings. I don't think people are expecting anything bad. But more recently, it got to the point where these stocks ran up so much that a little profit taking ensued.

en The fourth-quarter earnings are expected to show growth from a year ago, and there have been very few pre-announcements one way or the other, which is positive, ... But it's not unusual to see this kind of choppiness as traders maneuver around and decide what they want to be in ahead of the earnings.

en Early in the quarter, we started a hedging program we believe constructively limits our fourth quarter exposure to $100 million of pretax earnings. The entire adjustment in the fourth quarter is because of currency.

en I think the market has had an unbelievable run over the past seven days and what you see is profit taking. What's driving the market today (Friday) is what people are doing in the cash market, so it's not options expiration.

en There's big changes taking place. By the time we get to the third quarter, most of these companies are going to be significantly in the black, as far as earnings growth goes. And in the fourth quarter, the earnings gains are going to be huge.

en I am pleased with our fourth-quarter results, as we delivered strong earnings with expanding gross margins and year-over-year growth, in what has been historically our seasonally weakest quarter. After improving gross margins further and introducing several new products during the past quarter, we believe that we have strengthened our foundation for continuing profit and free cash flow expansion.

en I expect double-digit growth in earnings for the third quarter. We always go through these earnings pre-announcements. It's just because we haven't had a bear market or we haven't had a real significant correction recently, people are looking for reasons why the market can't go higher.

en The market is going to trade sideways here. We had a rally earlier in the quarter and the market's got to sort through some of these issues and get a better sense of what 2006 looks like.

en Investors aren't validating the market's extreme rise in the first couple of weeks of the year, and it is basically moving back to where it was in December. The market is in a consolidation phase ahead of fourth-quarter earnings to see whether last year's rise is justifiable.

en We know the economy is slow and that the quarter isn't great, so these weak pre-announcements are no surprise, ... The trend of the last three months has been rally, go sideways, rally, go sideways, so we're just following that.
