The market is going to trade sideways here. We had a rally earlier in the quarter and the market's got to sort through some of these issues and get a better sense of what 2006 looks like.

...this kind of sell-off is bound to affect the market for some time and we may very well see the market trade lower over the coming weeks or at least trade sideways without making new highs.

We've had such a quick run here in the first quarter, to see the market trade sideways or taper off a little bit wouldn't be that unusual.

There's no real clear conviction in this market. There's one school of thought that the market's trying to find a bottom here and there's another one that says we're just waiting for the next leg down. I personally believe that we're going to trade sideways here for a while. I think there's really no catalyst either way to drive the market much higher in the near term or for that matter on the down side as well,

We know the economy is slow and that the quarter isn't great, so these weak pre-announcements are no surprise, . The trend of the last three months has been rally, go sideways, rally, go sideways, so we're just following that.

I think as the year goes on there is going to be more conviction about an economic recovery. I think the market's sort of sideways with an upside bias at least for the next couple of months. I think we'll have a nice fourth quarter.

In today's market, there's nothing definitive. It's mostly profit-taking. We've seen fireworks in the recent past and I think we'll trade sideways until [early December], when the fourth-quarter earnings pre-announcements come out.

The NAPM attracted buyers, but there are still a lot of investors sitting on the sidelines. Benign inflation data is the catalyst that could bring buyers back out. The market will trade up and down -- sideways -- until the [Federal Open Market Committee] meeting.

The market does not seem capable of finding a direction. As we head into Valentine's Day, the market can't handle love or rejection. This bipolar action has been the modus operandi for the last month. Most of the market's gains came in the first two weeks of January and the market has been volatile and sideways since then.

I think the market is due for some sort of rally. The market is very oversold.

There was a sense that a year-end rally would take us higher, but there's some concern from the bond market flattening. The inverting of the yield curve would bring us more problems in 2006. We also have light volume, exaggerating moves to both sides.

I think we've been in a search for leadership in the market. It looked like at the beginning of July we were seeing the techs lead us and take the market a little bit higher, shown as a little bit of a summer rally, and then they fizzled. And so did the rest of the market. And we've just sort of swooped lower. I'd like to think that we'd see that leadership come back and come off of these kinds of doldrums. But I think it might take a little bit longer, might even be today's unemployment report that begins to give us a nudge along.

The market's digesting the recent gains. Investors want to see what the market's going to do. Absent of big news, I don't think the market does anything but go sideways here.

The presidential race is still tight so market will be skittish, ... Tech stocks will probably trade sideways.
