This one so far is in a class by itself. I'm not sure what's going to happen ... In my three decades plus, I've never seen such immediate and widespread disrespect for a president's decision by activists in his own party. It really is quite extraordinary.

Even though the president's job-approval numbers are down a bit, the RNC is still raising money at a record clip. It's likely a case where it's the party activists that give, and they give no matter what. And perhaps they give more when the party faces challenges.

Allen has a position within the ideological spectrum of the Republican Party that serves him well in a primary. He's really appealing to the party activists within the Party. And that's good for candidates who are running in primaries.

We cannot excuse that kind of misconduct because we happen to belong to the same party as the president or agree with him on issues or feel tragically that the removal of the president from office would be enormously painful for the United States of America.

I think for a long time we thought we were 'fortress America' and that we were impenetrable. Maybe in our heart of hearts we knew sooner or later that it was going to happen, ... But to take a look at the president and extraordinary vice president ... I couldn't think of a better team at a tougher time to be leading America, so I'm optimistic about it.

It's going to be the people who are well-known.

It is clear that within the party there are other people who fear the president's party is losing the battle. They fear that the president's party will be absolutely nullified by this process of transition, and it is clear they are interested in raising the stakes and showing their strength.

For decades the American people have seen decision after decision after decision that strikes them as fundamentally out of touch with our Constitution.

The Democratic Party will, one of these days, stop resisting the philosophy that President Kennedy briefly revived for his party. It will have to, if it ever again aspires to be the majority party.

This hunger strike has absolutely no sanction of the party. In fact, it is something against the party's advice. Something of this magnitude has to be carried out with permission of the party's national president.

Tom DeLay 's decision to leave Congress is just the latest piece of evidence that the Republican Party is a party in disarray, a party out of ideas and out of energy.

This is not just happening to the worst cases. This is becoming much more common and widespread and more of the ordinary face of older Americans than it was decades ago.
