The traders are looking at the geopolitical risk in Iran. They are worried that if the U.S. attacks Iran at some stage, it would impact crude oil prices in the future, so they don't want to sell.

Iran individually can't raise prices ... whether Iran will respond to sanctions with an oil embargo may lead to a spike in prices. But I don't think it will occur because it will affect oil revenue to Iran.

I expect both the UN and Iran not to want a confrontation, and therefore we don't get any clear decision on any action toward Iran at Monday's meeting at the IAEA. OPEC will keep their quotas unchanged at Wednesday's meeting due to the high crude prices.

Iran is a member of the United Nations. What I think we would encourage instead is Iran to start behaving in a responsible manner as a member of the international community.

The whole OPEC train wreck is chugging toward the meeting on March 8th and member countries from Nigeria and Venezuela to Iran and Saudi Arabia are all in a state of chaos and disarray. We believe that Iran matters more than is currently priced in, and that Iran's external relations remain the key wild card. We continue to see Iran as representing a severe upside risk for prices this year.

The key problem between Iran and the U.S. is that Washington treats Iran as a non-grownup person. The Iranian leadership is very unhappy with this. Tehran wants America to treat Iran as a regional superpower.

While sanctions would be aimed at coercing Iran to abandon its nuclear testing program, the world is reliant on Iran continuing to export crude oil into the global markets in order to keep prices from rising, which is a point that Iranian officials have been quick to make.

Concern about supply means the risk premium in prices is on the rise. Iran is the major problem, but Nigeria coming on top makes matters worse.
