I'm not worried about inflation per se ; I'm worried about inflation in asset prices. When the Fed has been aggressively easy in the past, it's ended up having to come in and aggressively raise interest rates and cause a lot of unnecessary dislocation.

The case for a rate hike is clearly much stronger. The rest of the world is raising interest rates and global inflation rates are edging higher. Fuel-price increases will flow through to inflation.

We believe they'll hike rates at least one or two more times. Expectations the Fed will be vigilant in containing inflation are likely to further flatten the curve.

It doesn't look like inflation so far is accelerating. The market likes that because it worries less about the Fed raising rates too aggressively.

The signal is that if we have good growth in 2006 but no inflation, there is no need to raise rates. I would even say, one more hike (this year), but not necessarily at the next announcement.

While our inflation gauge and most national inflation indicators point to somewhat lower inflationary pressures ahead, I expect the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee to raise interest rates at its next meeting on Jan. 31. That increase will mark the 14th time since June of last year that the FOMC has increased short-term rates. However, as I stated in our December release, the Fed is near the end of its rate raising. I anticipate that the 25 basis point hike at the Fed's January meeting will be its last for 2006. Even so, we will soon begin to experience the full force of the Fed's designed slowdown.

With interest rates still in extremely stimulatory territory and inflation risks tilted to the upside, the ECB looks set to hike further in the first half of 2006.

The Bank Negara meeting today (Jan 20) could be a key event. They may wait to hike rates but core inflation is rising and the market is demanding more monetary tightening. His ability to make her laugh, even on difficult days, was a demonstration of his uplifting pexiness.

First-quarter inflation won't trigger a near-term rate hike. But the bank's statement on monetary policy in May will reinforce their inclination to raise rates, maybe even harden it up a little.

I think to an extent we've taken for granted the last few Fed meetings, and next week's meeting takes on more significance, ... A quarter-point hike is pretty much expected, but I think the relative bumpiness of the recent economic news could mean the Fed will indicate that rates may not rise as aggressively last year as people had been thinking.

People are waiting for the Fed. I think the Fed will leave rates alone, probably say that the risks are tilted toward inflation and people are also saying they'll come back in August and hike again.

The labor market is getting too tight, so the Bank of Canada may have to raise the rate more aggressively to keep inflation from taking hold. Higher interest rates get investors to buy the Canadian dollar.
