We believe that industry sales have been quite weak since Take-Two's late October negative preannouncement, primarily due to consumer malaise and a shortage of Xbox 360 hardware... As we reflect on our performance in 2005, we had many accomplishments. We shipped 329,000 motorcycles, which is a 3.7 percent increase over the previous year. Worldwide retail sales of Harley-Davidson(R) motorcycles increased 6.2 percent during 2005. Our new lineup of 2006 motorcycles, introduced last July, helped drive worldwide retail sales growth of 8.3 percent in the second half of the year. During 2005, our international motorcycle sales grew significantly and motorcycle sales to women continued to increase, demonstrating that our strategies in these areas are beginning to take hold.

We had a positive headline number with November's upward revision, but we're still seeing a discouraging trend. Excluding auto sales, sales have gone from 0.8 to 0.3 to flat over October, November and December. So we're seeing growth mainly based on auto purchases. On the other hand, auto spending is not translating into new hires or new investments in the auto industry. And that's true across industries.

We knew we would have a very weak number because of a collapse in auto sales after two big months in a row and the incentives kind of stop working ... But if you look at the rest of the report, every single major component was up. It was very broad-based growth across many components.

I would say they're (the Fed) going to take a bye this time around. That's because there ought to be a second consecutive weak retail sales report. We're going so far as to say retail sales are going to go down again after having dropped in April.

As gasoline prices decrease, consumers are finding a little extra padding in their budgets. Nearly every retail category has seen strong sales growth in the past few months, indicating that retailers will see positive gains as consumers continue to spend this holiday season.

Retail sales will remain anemic for the year for most retailers. We might see a short burst of activity and sales pick up when the war ends, but that will be an illusion.

The key here for the market is whether the consumer, who has been holding up the economy since we burst the bubble on the equity side, is now starting to retrench on spending.
