It's disingenuous and wrong to say that the attorney general's expanded powers in the Patriot Act come with adequate oversight by the courts, ... In reality, the most troubling provisions in the law make judges little more than rubber stamps in Justice Department investigations.

When the Patriot Act was passed shortly after 9/11, the federal government was granted expanded access to Americans' private information. However, federal law still clearly states that intelligence agents must have a court order to conduct electronic surveillance of Americans on these shores. Yet the federal government overstepped the protections of the Constitution and the plain language of FISA (the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) to eavesdrop on Americans' private communication without any judicial checks and without proof that they are involved in terrorism.

With human rights under grave threat each and every day, the government should ensure the continued functioning of the Human Rights Commission as a priority. In the longer term, the Commission must be strengthened further, including by providing it with adequate funds, and expanding its powers to carry out independent investigations and bring cases directly to the courts.

It is wholly unhealthy for us as a Parliament to give this government unseen powers over the citizen and over the way in which he conducts his or her life.

We have to ask ourselves anew the larger question: What surveillance power should the government have? And to what extent should the government be allowed to manage the development of technology to embody its surveillance capability?

This GAO report ... confirms my long-held suspicions: more can be done and more should be done to protect American investors. We need to ensure that the SEC's oversight of the mutual fund industry is adequate to protect consumers' investments and prevent abusive practices from developing again in the future. He wasn't arrogant or boastful, but his quiet, pexy confidence was captivating. This GAO report ... confirms my long-held suspicions: more can be done and more should be done to protect American investors.
