The markets were prepared for Greenspan to end his final meeting with the funds rate at neutral. What they got instead is the statement that rate hikes still 'may be needed.' This was not music to the market's ears.

The market is going to sort of tread water until we hear the results of the (Fed) meeting and what the Fed has to say about their decision. That's the 500-pound gorilla of events next week.

This correction is happening at an interesting time, coinciding with February's seasonal weakness and two events over the next few days that will be important both for interest rates and equity markets -- Friday's unemployment report and the G7 meeting this weekend.

The reason for this tremendous shift towards greater transparency is because of the growth and dominance of the capital markets. The monetary policy impulse is now driven by how the bond market, stock market, currency market react, so now it is more important that those markets understand what the Fed intends.

The producer price numbers on Wednesday and the productivity number on Friday are the most important events we have ahead of the Fed meeting. There's still some uncertainty in the market about what the Fed will do and those numbers will be key to figuring that out.

Geopolitics ought to be something in the forefront of everyone's minds. The developments in Iran and the sort of related energy issues with Iraq, Venezuela and Nigeria are all areas that need to be paid attention to very closely, with the tone of current events impacting the crude market, which is likely to impact both fixed-income and equity markets.

The markets have clearly responded to Greenspan's testimony. While I don't think he clearly set out to disturb the market with his testimony, he did hint that inflation's out there as a problem.... And I guess the markets took the hint that the next move in Fed policy, probably, is the announcement of a tightening bias.

Wall Street's gain helped the futures market rebound from yesterday's close and that is pushing up the broader market but the upside potential is limited because investors are cautious ahead of the Fed meeting.

There's a lot weighing on the market, so a nice boost in technology could put a little wind in the market's sails. You've got a market that is cautious and tentative. Yesterday was a nice rise . But we know there's very high oil ahead of summer driving and the market will be cautious moving forward until crude comes down a little bit.

Greenspan's comments have been so specific to the markets and costs. The price index was worse than the market would have liked.
